Local Youth Engagement Project: Ada Neild Chew

'Investigating how ideas of citizenship, gender equality and enfranchisement affect the lives of young people living in Crewe today'.
Local Youth Engagement is an educational and research project ran by Kirsty Bunting and Orlagh McCabe researchers at Manchester Metropolitan University. The project explores the work of twentieth century suffragette Ada Neild Chew. Ada Neild Chew rose to public attention with her letters to the Crewe Chronicle which revealed the horror of women's working conditions. The project circulates workshops across schools in Cheshire celebrating the importance of gender equality, women's history and enfranchisement.

I am involved with the project as an collaborating artist. I performed and filmed Chew's letters in autumn 2015, giving a voice to the strong, defiant words from the letters of such an inspiring woman. The recording of Chew's letters is a core feature of the educational workshops, designed to engage the children in women's history, particularly in their fight for gender equality.
